The Great Hammer!

Today morning, I "listened"- yes, I did listen to what my Atta's daughter (my cousin sister) Radha was telling about her work. I say this because when people narrate even the most beautiful stories, my mind is often in another zone unless the subject matter pertains to something specific about my known interests.

Radha is a civil engineer, and I was intrigued by a technical diagram I saw on her work laptop last evening. When I enquired what that diagram indicated, she went on to tell how her team was responsible for developing "jackets" which are oil drilling platforms on ocean shores. As part of that, huge steel piles are laid at the base of the platforms with hammers of size many times of what we have usually seen. Sometimes, in an attempt to embed the piles at the right depth on the sea shore, the pile just disappears off deep into the ocean!! With this description, my mouth was wide open. I was much ignorant. Oceans form 70% or more of earth's surface, and there is much science and technology associated with the same.

As I heard Radha narrate these interesting facts about her work and the technical jargons associated with it, I had a couple of emotions rise within me:
  • Do I have the same enthusiasm and clarity when talking about my work to a layman?
  • Like Radha, do I also do justice to my educational background (Computer Science engineering) in my current job?
  • Does my work impact the society or business in tangible ways?

While I cannot judge the answer to the third question, the answer to first two questions is a definite 'No'.
And as such, to make life worthwhile on the whole, there is a quest to give the best to my daughter, to honing my existing skills, to going deeper in meditations and contribute in fullness to the world around. Thanks to that hammer of oil drill platform piles, the imagery of which is inspiring me to do more in life! :)
